Explore Downtown Birmingham

Welcome to the Magic City —

Founded in 1871, the city of Birmingham had a rare natural combination of all three ingredients needed to produce steel – iron ore, coal and limestone.  Birmingham’s prominence in mining and steel production made it the industrial center of the South and prompted growth so speedy that it earned the nickname “Magic City.”

As industry waned across the country, Birmingham’s economy evolved beyond its iron and steel foundation. While manufacturing remains a key sector today, the city has also emerged as a leading hub for medical research and a significant player in regional banking and publishing — thanks for choosing Birmingham, UAB, Regions, Hoffman, Meredith and more!

Birmingham is also synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963 Birmingham was the site for public demonstrations of resistance to segregation, Martin Luther Ling’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and the deadly bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church. This cemented the city’s role in the global movement for equality.

Today, downtown continues to reflect the city’s rich history while thriving with innovation, entertainment and the vibrant culture that defines Birmingham. With so much to do and see, we want to make it easy for you to navigate and create your own self-guided tour(s) of this special place. To help, we’ve broken it down into bite-sized districts.

The Parkside district has undergone a remarkable transformation, largely due to the development of Railroad Park, a 19-acre urban oasis, and Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons. While downtown is lively throughout, Parkside stands out for its warm, community-oriented atmosphere. Downtown residents have a palpable presence in the district, often taking advantage of the park’s trails and scenic views — along with their furry friends! Just a few blocks away, The Battery houses some delicious local eats and even a brewery. After an evening of bites and brews, it’s not uncommon for Southside visitors to enjoy a stroll down Rotary Trail, a pedestrian greenway in the center of 1st Avenue South between 20th and 24th Street.

Adding vibrancy to BHM

Downtown is home to the Magic City’s only Business Improvement District (BID), the Downtown BHM BID. It includes three sub-districts: City Center, Five Points South and The Switch.

Property owners in each sub-district of the BID pool their resources to provide supplemental services that build on those provided by the city. Determined with input from property owners, BID services can include security, litter pick-up, graffiti removal, pressure washing, district events, marketing programs and other special projects – including the creation and management of dedicated pages on this website!

Click below to dig deeper into these sub-districts’ identities, histories and happenings.

Please note that the traditionally accepted districts of downtown do not match up exactly with BID sub-district boundaries. See here for official BID boundaries.
