Heaviest Corner on Earth

The Woodward Building, 20th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203
At the turn of the 20th Century, the spark of the Magic City was one to behold. As Birmingham became an industrial metropolitan area, one particular corner of the city stood above the rest (pun intended): the intersection of 1st Avenue and 20th Street North. Between the years of 1902-1912, four large buildings were erected on that corner, earning it the nickname “The Heaviest Corner on Earth”.
20th Street North

500 17th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203
20th Street North is a vibrant and historically significant thoroughfare that has witnessed the city’s evolution over the years. Lined with a mix of contemporary businesses, shops, and restaurants, the street still retains its historic charm with well-preserved architecture and landmarks. 20th Street spans across the city, beginning at the Birmingham Museum of Art and ending at the Storyteller Fountain, coinciding with several other districts making it the spine of Birmingham.

Sitting right across the street, The Lyric Theatre opened its doors in 1914 and was the first theatre where African and Caucasian Americans could attend the same show and pay the same price of admission.

Uptown, Birmingham’s first entertainment district, is a bustling urban area known for its entertainment, dining and shopping options. Located just north of the city center, it features modern architecture, green spaces and attractions like City Walk and the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. The district is intentionally well-planned and managed to ensure a visitor-friendly experience that can support multiple major events and attractions going on at the same time.
