Getting to know Downtown BHM: A district-by-district guide
January 12, 2026 · City Center, Engage, Five Points South, The Switch, Visit

Downtown Birmingham is bigger (and more layered) than many people realize. The map above offers a bird’s-eye view of the city’s urban core, highlighting the nine districts that together shape what we call Downtown BHM.
Each district has its own personality, history and a mix of amenities. Understanding how they fit together can make exploring downtown feel far more approachable. Below, we break down each district to help you get your bearings — whether you’re visiting for the first time, rediscovering downtown as a local or just planning your next day out.
Everyone has a different idea of what “downtown” really means, and we’re not here to draw hard boundaries. Instead, we’re offering a framework: a way to think about downtown by vibe, proximity and experience. Once you have that foundation, our website gives you the tools to go deeper. On our Visit page, you’ll find a choose-your-own-adventure–style tool that helps you build an itinerary, as well as curated experience trails.
Consider this your starting point. From here, you can zoom in, branch out and build your own version of downtown, one district at a time.
Historic City Center

If you picture downtown Birmingham as a skyline of classic buildings mixed with modern developments, you’re probably imagining the Historic City Center. This district blends preserved architecture with contemporary growth, creating the visual and cultural heart of the city.
As a Downtown BHM Business Improvement District (BID) sub-district, the Historic City Center benefits from added attention to things like cleanliness and safety initiatives (thanks CAP!) and public-facing enhancements — helping support an active, welcoming environment for businesses, residents and visitors alike.
Home to many of Birmingham’s most iconic landmarks, the Historic City Center is where history, arts, business and everyday city life intersect.
What you’ll find:
20th Street North • The Pizitz Food Hall • Heaviest Corner on Earth • Birmingham Museum of Art • Alabama Theatre • Linn Park • Morris Avenue
Uptown

Uptown is Birmingham’s first purpose-built entertainment district, designed to handle big crowds, big events and big energy all at once. Located just north of the Historic City Center, it pairs modern architecture with walkable streets and green space.
With major venues clustered together, Uptown is intentionally planned and managed to create a seamless visitor experience, whether you’re attending a concert, sporting event or convention.
What you’ll find:
Legacy Arena • Protective Stadium • Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex • Alabama Sports Hall of Fame • City Walk
Civil Rights District

Birmingham’s role in the Civil Rights Movement is nationally significant, and this district preserves, honors and interprets that history. Visiting the Civil Rights District offers a powerful, reflective experience that connects past struggles to the city’s present and future.
Alongside historic sites and memorials, the district is also home to longstanding Black-owned businesses and cultural institutions that continue to shape Birmingham’s identity.
What you’ll find:
Kelly Ingram Park • A.G. Gaston Motel • 16th Street Baptist Church • Birmingham Civil Rights Institute • Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame/Carver Theatre
The Switch

Once defined by railroad tracks crisscrossing the historic 14th Street Switchyard, this area still curves and bends around its industrial past. Today, The Switch is an emerging district fueling Birmingham’s growing innovation economy, anchored by Innovation Depot.
The Switch is part of the Downtown BHM BID, where coordinated district efforts support a cleaner, more business-friendly environment. That support complements the district’s entrepreneurial energy, allowing startups, creatives and tech companies to focus on building what’s next.
What you’ll find:
Innovation Depot • NEXTEC • Eleven Productions • So So Spiffy Home Staging and Design
Parkside

Parkside’s transformation has been shaped by two major anchors: Railroad Park and Regions Field. Together, they’ve helped create a district that feels residential, welcoming and community-oriented — even as it attracts visitors year-round.
With downtown residents, hotels, cultural attractions and green space all in close proximity, Parkside offers a uniquely balanced urban experience. It’s also one of the best places downtown to spot dogs, joggers and families enjoying the outdoors!
What you’ll find:
Railroad Park • Regions Field • Red Mountain Theatre • Good People Brewing Co. • Negro Southern League Museum
Southside

Historically home to downtown Birmingham’s early automotive district, Southside has evolved into a hub for everyday essentials and convenient living. Today, it’s where healthcare, grocery shopping, national retailers and local dining all intersect.
The district also offers easy access to the Rotary Trail, making it a popular spot for walking, biking and winding down after a meal or drink nearby.
What you’ll find:
Publix • The Painted Lady Hotel • Birmingham District Brewing Co. • Iron City • UAB healthcare facilities
Lakeview

Named for a long-gone artificial lake, Lakeview today is one of downtown’s most eclectic districts. Restaurants, dive bars, galleries, design shops and event spaces live side by side, creating a space that’s equal parts laid-back and lively.
Lakeview also has deep historical roots — including being the site of the very first Iron Bowl in 1893 — adding another layer to its already diverse character.
What you’ll find:
Pepper Place • Ballard Designs • Sloss Furnaces • Back Forty Brewing Co.
Five Points South

One of downtown’s oldest and liveliest districts, Five Points South is a true mixed-use neighborhood with personality to spare. Historic architecture, residential streets, nightlife and award-winning restaurants all coexist here, creating one of Birmingham’s most recognizable districts.
As a Downtown BHM BID sub-district, Five Points South benefits from shared investment in district upkeep, events and promotion — helping maintain the lively, walkable atmosphere that residents and visitors know and love.
From sake bars to Sunday morning church choirs, and from everyday hangs to signature events like the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (celebrated since 1984), Five Points South captures Birmingham’s layered, lived-in spirit.
UAB Campus

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has helped shape downtown for more than a century. From its roots in the Medical College of Alabama to today’s internationally recognized research and healthcare institution, UAB is a major driver of education, innovation and population growth downtown.
With thousands of students living nearby, the district adds constant energy and activity — and plays a major role in the rhythm of daily downtown life!
What you’ll find:
UAB Green • Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts • Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center

Downtown holiday traditions: Then and now
The holiday season in Birmingham has always had a magic all its own. From the fierce department store rivalries that defined downtown’s golden retail era (complete with dueling Santas and enchanted forests) to the shimmering streetlight displays and the modern-day introduction of new festive traditions like the Downtown BHM Holiday Ornament Trail, Birmingham’s downtown has long been the heart of the city’s seasonal spirit.
