Whether you’re visiting downtown Birmingham for a weekend getaway, attending a conference, catching a show, or exploring the area’s restaurants and attractions, getting around is easier than you might expect.

Downtown’s districts are connected by a walkable street grid, and visitors have several transportation options available — from public transit and on-demand rides to parking decks and convenient mobile payment tools. Here’s everything you need to know before your visit.

One of the best ways to experience downtown is by walking.

Many of the city’s most popular destinations are located within a short distance of one another. You can comfortably walk between Historic City Center, the Civil Rights District, Parkside, and Southside in a single afternoon.

Along the way, you’ll discover local restaurants, public art, historic architecture, parks, and shops that are easy to miss when traveling by car.

If you’re planning a full day downtown, consider parking once and exploring multiple districts on foot!

For visitors looking to travel beyond downtown — or locals seeking an affordable alternative to driving — MAX Transit operates bus service throughout Birmingham and Jefferson County.

MAX’s downtown hub, Central Station, serves as the system’s primary transfer point, connecting riders to destinations across the region. The system also includes the Birmingham Xpress (BX), a bus rapid transit route that travels east-west across the city with enhanced stations and frequent service. MAX buses are ADA-accessible and can be tracked through the MAX Connect app

Other helpful resources:

Some routes may operate less frequently than transit systems in larger cities, so planning ahead will help you make the most of your day. Many visitors find the MAX Connect app helpful for tracking routes and arrival times.

Looking for something more flexible than a traditional bus route?

MAX On-Demand is Birmingham’s microtransit service, offering shared rides that can be booked directly through an app. Think of it as a hybrid between public transportation and a rideshare service. Instead of following a fixed route, vehicles pick up and drop off riders within designated service zones. The service costs just $1.50 per trip, with discounted fares for additional passengers traveling together.

Visitors often find MAX On-Demand especially useful for:

The service can be booked through the MAX Connect app and operates six days a week. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available upon request.

Driving remains one of the most convenient ways to reach downtown, and visitors will generally find parking more affordable and plentiful than in many larger cities. However, not all parking options operate the same way.

Birmingham Parking Authority Facilities

The easiest option for many visitors is to use a public parking deck or lot operated by the Birmingham Parking Authority (BPA). These facilities are located throughout downtown and are commonly used by visitors attending events, dining downtown, or spending the day exploring.

Public facilities typically offer clear signage, established rates, and convenient access to major destinations.

Private Parking Lots

Downtown also includes numerous privately owned parking lots and decks. These facilities often use automated payment systems and may have different rules, rates, and enforcement policies than public facilities. Before leaving your vehicle, carefully review all posted signage and payment instructions.

Use the Park Smart Map

Not sure where to park?

The City of Birmingham’s Park Smart program includes an interactive map that helps visitors locate public parking decks, surface lots, and other parking resources before arriving downtown. The map can be especially useful when planning visits to major attractions, festivals, or sporting events.

Paying for Parking with ParkMobile

Many downtown parking spaces use ParkMobile, a mobile payment platform that allows drivers to pay directly from their phones.

After parking, simply enter the zone number displayed on nearby signage and complete payment through the app. In many locations, visitors can also extend their parking session remotely without returning to their vehicle.

Whether you’re driving, riding transit, or exploring on foot, downtown offers multiple ways to get where you’re going. With affordable parking, walkable districts, public transit, and app-based transportation options, visitors can spend less time navigating logistics and more time enjoying everything downtown has to offer.

The ripple effect of downtown investment

Big change downtown rarely happens because of a single project. More often, one investment makes people see a place differently. A park fills up. A trail gets people walking between neighborhoods. An old building turns its lights back on. People spend more time there. Businesses open nearby. More people decide to live downtown. Slowly, one […]
